Vernon and Maralee Jones Chair in Civil Engineering
THE CIVIL, ARCHITECTURAL, & ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT OF THE
MISSOURI UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE &TECHNOLOGY (Missouri S&T; formerly
University of Missouri-Rolla, or UMR) invites applications or nominations for
the endowed Vernon and Maralee Jones Chair in Civil Engineering. We seek
an individual with a sustained record of professional achievement as indicated
by outstanding teaching, significant sponsored research and publications and/or
major leadership activities. This endowed chair is a commitment to the
continuing effort by the department to maintain and enhance its national
prominence in undergraduate and graduate education and research. The
Jones Chair will take an active part in expanding on the current research
strength in infrastructure engineering and develop new research incentives.
The Jones Chair will have the opportunity to be appointed as the Director
of the existing Center for Infrastructure Engineering Studies (http://www.cies.mst.edu/ ). The
Jones Chair may be expected to interact with on-going campus-wide research
activities and research centers. including university's National and Regional
University Transportation Centers (http"//www.utc.mst.edu/) and the
Intelligent Systems Center (http://www.isc.mst.edu/ ), and will also
likely have a major role in the enhancement and use of current outstanding
laboratory facilities including the existing High-Bay Structural Engineering
Laboratory.
The start date for this endowed appointment is anticipated to be August
2009. Preference will be given to those candidates with specialization in
infrastructure related engineering discipline who possess an undergraduate
degree in civil engineering from am ABET/EAC accredited program or equivalent
and an earned PhD in civil engineering or a closely related field. The
position requires instruction in undergraduate and graduate coursework, in
addition to interdisciplinary and interdepartmental research. Superior
communication and interpersonal skills, demonstrated leadership capabilities,
the ability to engage in collaborative research and the ability to motivate and
inspire students are required attributes. The successful candidate is
expected to understand the importance of economics in successful project
finance, to appreciate the global market in which we operate today, and become
a nationally and internationally recognized individual. The
successful candidate will strengthen, and capitalize on, Missouri S&T's
strong ties with industry, institutions and government agencies and build
relationships with each. The successful candidate will be expected to
become a licensed Professional Engineer in Missouri within a five year period
after employment.
Missouri S&T is the technological campus of the University of
Missouri system. The Department's civil engineering program has recently
been ranked among the top 25 undergraduate and top 45 graduate civil
engineering programs by the U.S. News and World Report. This department
is an integral supporter of the following research centers: the University
Transportation Center (one of the 10 existing national UTC centers), the Center
for Infrastructure Engineering Studies, the Wei-Wen Yu Center for Cold Formed
Steel Structures, the Environmental Research Center for Emerging Contaminants,
the Materials Research Center, the Intelligent Systems Center,and the National
Hazards Mitigation Institute.

Environmental Research Center (erc.mst.edu). The Mathes Chair will have
opportunities to draw upon diverse ongoing research activities at Missouri
S&T to develop fruitful collaborations, while simultaneously enhancing the
productivity, stature and capabilities of the Environmental Research Center and
the Mathes Environmental Engineering Laboratories.
The start date for this endowed appointment is open, and all areas of
environmental engineering research will be considered. Candidates are preferred
who possess an undergraduate degree in civil, chemical or environmental
engineering from an ABET/EAC accredited program or equivalent and an earned PhD
in fields closely related to environmental engineering. The position
requires instruction in undergraduate and graduate coursework, in addition to
interdisciplinary and interdepartmental research. Superior
communication and interpersonal skills, demonstrated leadership capabilities,
the ability to engage in collaborative research and the ability to motivate and
inspire students and colleagues ae required attributes. The successful
candidate will strengthen , and capitalize on , Missouri S&T's strong
ties with industry, educational institutions, and federal and state agencies
and build relationships with each. The successful candidate will be expected to
pursue professional licensure in Missouri.
